The Mammut Stratus Hybrid jacket combines hard and soft fabrics. The arms, shoulders and hood of the jacket are a soft shell. These upper body areas have the greatest range of movement, so the soft shell material stretches and doesn’t restrict movement. The remainder of the jacket is made from hard shell fabrics. The jacket is insulated with a layer of Fiberfil.
The Status Hybrid kept its warmth in cold temperatures and repelled windy conditions. The soft shell materials gave plenty of flexibility during vigorous activity and the sleeves do not ride up on the forearms. Add a mid layer for added warmth. Last week, I test drove the Mammut Stratus Hybrid jacket during a week-long ice climbing adventure in the mountains of Colorado. Every day, from early morning until night, we searched for big icicles to climb, which meant long hours in very cold, wet conditions, with temperatures ranging from the teens to low 40s. This jacket kept me warm and dry, in a mix of precipitation - rain, ice, snow and slush, every day. Not only is the Stratus Hybrid powerfully windproof, it's warm and rugged. I was positive it would rip or snag as I rubbed up on rough ice, snagged tree branches, perched against sharp rocks, but the jacket still looks brand new and it's not even scratched. The hood is spacious and adjustable, which is awesome. The sleeves, equipped with handy thumbholes, keep your jacket organized while adding or stripping layers and gloves. The Stratus Hybrid offers incredible wind control, which is key in cold, wintry conditions, whether you're tromping through snowy canyons, belaying your climbing partner in the shade, or riding your bike around town. It's the perfect shell over a light down coat or under a rain jacket for super wet conditions. Overall, the Stratus Hybrid is an extremely versatile jacket that's warm, windproof, rugged and cozy.

Mammut Jacket Works Like A Pinecone

wiss brand Mammut is launching another top-end alpine shell jacket featuring the innovative Schoeller fabric which adjusts its breathability levels according to the ambient temperature.
Due out in September 2010, the Chalten Jacket uses Schoeller c_change fabric which the brand says 'opens and closes like a pinecone' according to the temperature. The idea is that the fully waterproof fabric opens up in warmer conditions or at times of sweaty high activity to increase breathability and comfort, while in cooler situations, the membrane closes down and allows a comforting warm fug to build up inside for increased warmth.
It's not the first time Mammut has used the Schoeller material in a shell jacket. We tried the £370 Cho Oyu Jacket last year and found that while it was a neat, close-fitting alpine shell with a tough feel to it. What we did find hard to detect, was any major benefit from the c_change fabric. It did feel as breathable as other top fabrics like eVent, but in UK conditions, we couldn't detect any real warmth increases when things cooled down.
We suspect that the difference between the 'open' and 'closed' state of the fabric would  be more pronounced in very cold and dry alpine conditions however, so it might be more of a boon in those circumstances, which after all, is what the jacket was designed for.
Schoeller says, c_change gives MVT - Moisture Vapour Transfer - rates of around rates of 20,000 g/m2/24h, which is approximately the same as eVent, a fabric that's very breathable, but some users find cold at a standstill because of the level of permeability. Mammut says that between 10C and 20C, moisture vapour transfer rates increase by around 50 per-cent, which is a fair slice.
Other features of the Chalten include a redesigned tailored hood which is helmet compatible, fully adjustable, has a reinforced peak and can be rolled down into a collar. Pit-zips and pockets with 'spray proof' – water resistant – zips, pre-shaped sleeves and YKK zips, yes, spray-proof ones.
What it doesn't have are the Cho Oyu's chin-guard perforations, but there's some pretty neat looking detailing if you zoom in on the product pics below. Price will be £350, that's £20 less than the Cho Oyu.

Review: Mammut Stratus Hybrid Jacket

Last week, I test drove the Mammut Stratus Hybrid jacket during a week-long ice climbing adventure in the mountains of Colorado. Every day, from early morning until night, we searched for big icicles to climb, which meant long hours in very cold, wet conditions, with temperatures ranging from the teens to low 40s. This jacket kept me warm and dry, in a mix of precipitation – rain, ice, snow and slush, every day. Not only is the Stratus Hybrid powerfully windproof, it’s warm and rugged. I was positive it would rip or snag as I rubbed up on rough ice, snagged tree branches, perched against sharp rocks, but the jacket still looks brand new and it’s not even scratched. The idea is that you have your pockets in one configuration for walking use, but then change them for climbing. Two-way zips on the large, diagonal front pockets allow them to be top access or bottom access, small or large depeding on your needs. You could, for example, move the pocket openings to chest height for climbing use with a harness or shift the zips downwards for handwarmer-height pockets on cold days.

Mammut Adamello Jacket
Sounds interesting – we’re not sure if the jackets are compartmentalised internally to give upper and lower pocket bags, but it would make sense. At least one Haglofs soft shell uses a similar double-ended pocket zip, though in that case, the top half of the zip accesses venting mesh rather than a pocket. Of course, if you’re not a pocket user, none of this will bother you over much,
The jackets are also very light – 440g for the Albaron and 370g for the Adamello – feature a new hood desugn which, it says here, can be adjusted vertically and horizontally and worn under a helmet, have pit-zips, adjustable hems and an abrasion resistant print on both shoulders and the hip area.
